In the 75th minute, junior forward and leading goal scorer Katy Scherer hit the ground and was down for more than five minutes against Hamline University (7-2-1, 2-2-1) Saturday, Sept. 29, at home.

Play stopped while Scherer was helped onto a cart and driven off the field. Scherer fell awkwardly on her knee, but the seriousness of the injury is unknown.

Piper sophomore forward Aileen Scheibner scored the game’s lone goal. She blasted a shot past Tommie sophomore goalkeeper Tori Shepard just as the first half whistle blew.

The game marked the Tommies’ fifth loss on the season by one goal.

Neither team had more than nine shots on goal; goalkeepers on both sides made key saves to keep the score close.

St. Thomas coach Sheila McGill described her team’s losing effort as a “frustrating day” due to the poor passing and possession problems.

“We just really, truly didn’t connect at all today. We struggled in our attacking just with technical passing, just finding each others feet,” McGill said.

Despite the offensive mistakes, the Tommies’ defense did not go unnoticed. The team did its best to keep Hamline from handling the ball in the box, while Shepard made some key stops.

St. Thomas sophomore midfielder and team scoring leader Taylor Sabrowski gave Hamline credit for its solid defense.

“We could have moved off the ball a little bit more,” Sabrowski said. “We had really good opportunities, the finishing touch just wasn’t there today.”

Sabrowski gave some pointers her team needs to focus on heading into its next game.

“I would say just playing the full 90 (minutes), not to hang our head after we get down. We easily could have came back today,” Sabrowski said.

St. Thomas (4-5, 3-2) will play St. Benedict’s (3-4-2, 2-3) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3 in St. Joseph, Minn.
