MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Rachel Werdin scored twice as St. Thomas women’s hockey (12-3-5 overall, 8-1-4 MIAC) dominated the ice against St. Olaf (3-14-3 overall, 2-9-2 MIAC) Friday night at the St. Thomas Ice Arena with a final score of 6-1.

Both teams battled for offensive control throughout the first period. First-year forward Maddy Fiedler broke the gridlock toward the end of the first period with the first goal of the game.

The younger players supported the team, scoring five of the six goals. Sophomore forward Rachel Werdin led the team in points with two goals.

“Anyone can pick up the role,” Werdin said. “We have freshmen who are putting in a lot of points this year.”

Werdin emphasized that on and off the ice utilizes everyone’s talents regardless of age.

“It doesn’t really matter in the locker room,” Werdin said. “We all look at each other as equals, not really as classes.”

Due to an incident last season, the team cannot participate in the playoffs, but with their successful season so far they still hope to gain the conference title.

“Not having playoffs kind of sucks, but it means we have to make the most of every game we have left,” Werdin said.

The Tommies will face off against the Oles for the last time Saturday afternoon in Northfield.
