Freshman Hannah Pawlik and sophomore Katy Scherer scored the goals for the St. Thomas women’s soccer team in its 2-1 victory over Concordia-Moorhead in Tuesday’s MIAC game at St. Thomas’ South Field.
This win was a rebound for the Tommies (5-2 overall, 3-1 MIAC), who fell short after a 2-1 overtime loss to Augsburg in last Saturday’s game.
“We had a really tough loss on Saturday, so this was good to beat a really good team in the MIAC,” Scherer said.
The Tommies gave the No. 22-ranked Cobbers its first loss of the season.
St. Thomas coach Sheila McGill was excited to see the intensity level the team had throughout the entire game.
“One thing we focused on this year was taking one game at a time,” McGill said. “It allows that belief system of each individual to step into each moment and be able to rise to the occasion.”
Pawlik scored the first goal of the game and put the Tommies up 1-0 in the 16th minute.
This was Pawlik’s first goal of the season.
“It makes me want to do better and play my hardest knowing that all my teammates are there to support me,” Pawlik said.
Concordia’s Gina Weiss scored an unassisted goal in the 29th minute making it a tie game.
With less than five minutes left in the game, Scherer scored the game-winning goal assisted by sophomore Jenna Savino.
Savino was exhausted after the game but had a smile on her face as she and Scherer celebrated.
“It was nerve-racking, but we took care of business,” Savino said.
McGill was proud to see the excitement of the team.
“I think it really comes down to a belief in each other,” McGill said. “I love the fact that the team is completely connected from the field all the way to the bench.”
The Tommies travel to Hamline to play the Pipers at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Men’s soccer tops Cobbers 4-1
The men’s team also played Concordia-Moorhead at St. Thomas Tuesday and raced to a four goal lead in the first half.
Junior Josh Pozner and sophomores Nick Rapisarda, Sam Sutton, and Alex Bernhardt handled the scoring for the Tommies in a 4-1 victory.
The lead was enough for sophomore goalie Jace Leiferman, who made four saves to help the Tommies improve to a 2-1 record in the MIAC.
