After three consecutive overtime games, the Tommie women’s soccer team was visibly relieved to settle this one in regulation.
The Tommies (6-3-2 overall, 4-1-2 MIAC) pulled through for a 2-1 win against Macalester on Tuesday evening.
Tommie sophomore forward Jenna Savino scored the first goal of the game in the 29th minute with an assist from sophomore forward Nicole Sheehan.
The Scots (8-5-1, 4-2-1) tied up the game 1-1 at 79 minutes with a goal by senior Matea Wasend.
With the game tied toward the end of the second half, leading scorer Katy Scherer stepped up and scored with about four minutes left.
Coach Shelia McGill, now in her fifth season coaching at St. Thomas, was proud of the team’s effort.
“We played solid the whole time. They stayed composed and came together to really dig down deep to fight through the last 10 minutes and put the goal in,” McGill said. “It was great individual and team effort.”
The Tommies had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal during the game. St. Thomas’ senior goalie Allie Byron and Macalester’s Rosie Glenn-Fisher each had four saves.
The Tommies face St. Benedict’s team on Saturday for their last home game of the regular season.
McGill plans to focus on the offensive strategy to win on Saturday.
“We are really proud and strong right now defensively, so it really is going to be about continuing to get numbers forward so we can attack as a team,” McGill said.
