Senior forward Kristen Epperly put up two points with an assist and the final goal as St. Thomas women’s soccer shut down the University of Wyoming with a 3-0 win Tuesday at South Field.
After multiple early breakaways in the first half, the Tommies (2-2-1) finally secured a goal with 55 seconds left in the half from senior forward Maddie Bomsta assisted by Epperly.
“It was awesome, especially because she (Bomsta) is my roommate it was fun to get us finally playing together and getting that goal,” Epperly said.
Feeding off their previous goal, junior midfielder Jasmine Gates put one into the back of the net only 30 seconds into the second half assisted by first-year forward Lexi Huber.
Coach Sheila McGill wanted to take every chance they had to put the game away early and not make it a close-scoring game.
“We didn’t want to slow down after the first,” McGill said. “We wanted to keep going forward and not sitting around and hoping we win a 1-0 game.”
The Tommies kept pushing late into the game tiring out the Cowboys’ defense and scored their third goal by Epperly with a header.
“We were trying to keep them under pressure the whole game,” Epperly said. “We played so well as a team, that was our team chemistry in physical form,” Bomsta added.
After Tuesday’s game, McGill sees the progression of her team becoming more comfortable on and off the field.
“They are getting to know each other as players better and because of that they are each other’s feet rather than someone in space,” McGill said.
The Tommies will face Marquette University in their next match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
