Forward Mallory DeBoom scored her 10th and 11th goals of the season Wednesday at South Field, helping lead the St. Thomas women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Concordia-Moorhead.
With quick ball movement, high pace and a strong team chemistry, the Tommies (8-0 MIAC, 14-1 overall) defeated the Cobbers (2-4-2 MIAC, 6-6-3 overall) and extended their win streak to a MIAC-best 14 games.
“We set the pace. We talked about it all week long,” coach Sheila McGill said. “Some games we have been a bit casual, and we talked about setting the pace and keeping the ball moving very quickly today.”
DeBoom and forward Kristen Epperly opened the scoring for the match, giving the Tommies a 2-0 lead by halftime.Because of the large lead, the Tommies were able to get 26 out of the team’s 27 players into the match.
Midfielder Kalli Baarstad scored the only goal for Concordia, finding the net in the 51st minute of play. Tommie midfielder Elizabeth Luotto answered with a header goal set up by a DeBoom corner kick. DeBoom then scored her second goal of the night off a dish from forward Paige Cater.
The senior forward said her two scores didn’t feel any different than the rest of her 37 career goals.
“We just want to work hard for each other and create opportunities for all us,” DeBoom said.
The Tommie’s chemistry and uplifting encouragement are what set the team apart from its opponents, according to McGill.
“Team chemistry is the building block of what we do. These girls love each other on and off the field and I think other teams notice that,” McGill said.
The Tommies look to extend their win streak to 15 as they travel to St. Olaf to take on the Lions (5-2-1 MIAC, 6-6-3 overall) Saturday.
