The women’s tennis team defeated Southwest Minnesota State 9-0 at the Anderson Fieldhouse Saturday.

The Tommies easily bounced back from a 9-0 loss last weekend against Creighton University.

“I think we did really well today, and it was a good confidence booster for the rest of the season,” junior Mary Allen said.

Allen, who played No. 1 doubles with partner freshman Kara Lefsrud, posted an 8-5 win.

The Tommies were able to come into Saturday’s match with two team points due to Mustang forfeits.

“Even though they did not bring their whole team, we tried to put our best foot forward and play hard against those girls,” Allen said.

Coach Terry Peck said that he was able to move players to different spots and try a new doubles team. Sophomore Rachel Wright, who moved to No. 1 singles against the Mustangs, came away with a 6-4, 6-0 win.

The new doubles pairing of freshman Claire Elkin and sophomore Anna Wright won their match 8-2.

Wright praised her partner’s “monster serve” and said that she looks forward to improving as a doubles team.

“I think I am going to work on getting a good vibe going with my doubles partner, just basically connecting as a team,” Wright said.

Peck was happy with the team’s results and said that its performance was “typical of an early match.”

Peck also said that he is looking forward to his young team, which is made up of only freshmen, sophomores and juniors, improving over the course of the year.
