Key individual victories by freshmen Brittany Alexander and Kara Lefsrud guided the women’s tennis team win against Concordia-Moorhead 6-3 in its first conference match Sunday at the Anderson Fieldhouse.
Coach Terry Peck said he was impressed with the freshmen performances; Alexander won her matches 6-3 and 6-2 while Lefsrud won hers 6-3, 6-1.
“Our freshmen played probably their best matches today,” Peck said. “All the way down the line, we were solid.”
Lefsrud thinks the team’s previous win over the University of Minnesota-Duluth gave it a confidence boost.
“We all had a lot of confidence from our win against Duluth yesterday,” Lefsrud said. “That really helped us today.”
Even with the team win, Peck said he was impressed with Concordia’s solid play.
“As a coach you always want those victories, but it’s a little more satisfying when you know you’ve played a good team and that they were trying hard,” Peck said.
The Tommies will now prepare for their match against St. Catherine next weekend. Lefsrud is maintaining a positive attitude about the upcoming match.
“Hopefully things will work out and if we can keep our head in it and pull through,” Lefsrud said. “It will be a tough match, but I think we can do it.”
Peck is more reserved with his thoughts regarding the upcoming match.
“Supposedly (St. Catherine) has its strongest team ever this year,” Peck said. “I’ve been here for 26 years and the team is the best team they’ve ever had… (We’ve) never lost to St. Kate’s, but it wouldn’t be something I’d feel bad about because they’ve worked hard.”

Way to go Tommies. Always fun to watch the Tommies play tennis and see the great Coach Peck.
