A pair of second-half goals from forward Megan Zickert led the No. 16 St. Thomas women’s soccer team to its 12th-straight win Tuesday at home, defeating University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 4-1.
The Tommies (6-0 MIAC, 12-1 overall) fell behind in the first half after Blugolds (4-6-1) forward Mercedes Wilson scored on a breakaway in the 11th minute. The Tommies countered immediately, after forward Mallory DeBoom scored in the 12th minute to tie the game 1-1.
“Grit finally came out of us, and you could see that we were having fun,” coach Sheila McGill said. “It’s great to be here each day and they are really playing together as a unit, on and off the field.”
Only four minutes later, forward Kaley Roberts added another goal for the Tommies.
“When they went up on us first, it was a sort of wake-up call,” McGill said “We did what needed to be done, and we did it immediately. Kaley’s goal brought us back ahead and from there on out we played really great soccer.”
Steady rain fell throughout the entire match, but forward Megan Zickert said it didn’t affect her at all.
“It felt great to score today,” she said, “because I’ve been in a bit of a slump the past few games and these conditions make it hard to play. There is always room for improvement, but I am really happy to help my team in any way possible. Today, it was by scoring twice.”
The Tommies have a chance for their 13th win in a row Saturday at home against St. Catherine University.
